About

Heather Fellows

I am an artist based in Warwick in the UK, working in a variety of mediums including painting, textiles and photography.

The use of line was an important starting point for my work; the sharpness and boldness of the undiluted mark, whether that was painted, dripped or stitched. When people said, “I can always tell which work is yours” I was never really sure why, but now looking back over my last three years at University I believe it was because this strong mark making and boldness of line has appeared in all of my best work.  At Coventry University, my work has developed in directions I would never have expected. I use paint, thread, collage and photography to develop and create my images.
Over the last year I had almost been exclusively using thread as my drawing line, working with bright bold colours and tactile surfaces. I love being able to work with a surface I can manipulate, pull apart and rebuild.
My inspiration comes mainly from nature, from its animals, shapes, colours and textures. My most recent work has come directly from nature itself, in a series of exploratory photographs. These images are of an octopus, which were manipulated to create luscious and juicy forms that appeared almost like glazed ceramic, brightly coloured and glossy. I love their ambiguous nature both scale and material, this is an element that really appeals to me. As an artist I thrive on trying out new mediums and techniques, rather than focusing on one, and have begun to pull all these elements together to create my work.
